Chinese Brush Paintings and Calligraphy by River Han

When we discovered the artwork of River Han we were completely mesmerized. His masterful Chinese Brush Paintings are exquisite, he has developed a distinctive style, incorporating Chinese Calligraphy in his beautiful paintings. The Tigers, Cranes, Orchids, and Landscapes are nothing but amazing and will make a statement in every home or office.

River Han always loved to paint ever since he was young. His architecture training continued to enhance his painting knowledge throughout his career years.

He did lots of different techniques like sketches, pencil, charcoal, watercolor, acrylic painting, oil painting, and Chinese brush and ink painting. River eventually decided to focus on Chinese brush and ink painting because he found the Chinese brush to be such a flexible and versatile painting tool.

He loves to practice and sketch from the actual objects until he feels comfortable to capture the essence of what he wants to paint. This is what he told us when we asked him about his subjects:

“To paint tigers, I visited Chimelong Safari Park in Panyu and the Siberian Tiger Park in Harbin in China multiple times besides visiting zoos whenever possible.”

“Then, to paint cranes, I visited the Zhalong National Nature Reserve in Heilongjiang, China. The red-crowned crane is also called Manchurian crane. It is a large East Asian crane, among the rarest cranes in the world, often known as a symbol of luck, longevity, and fidelity. They are beautiful to look at and enjoyable to paint.”

“As for landscape painting, I have studied from traditional old masters’ pieces as well as exploring modern Chinese brush painting techniques. I visited Huangshan in China eight times to be inspired by the impressive and ever-changing scenes amid the mountains and clouds.”

“I also love to paint Chinese orchids. In Chinese culture, it represents integrity, nobility, and friendship, all of which are virtues of a perfectly cultured gentleman and scholar. The orchid flower has a very unique fragrance, light, sweet and soothing. The flowers in bloom would last for several months, elegant and not showy. Painting Chinese orchid is challenging, not only from the composition between the flowers and the leaves but also because every brush stroke needs to be final. No correction or change is acceptable. However, the end results are very often gratifying.”

“I was very fortunate to have the chance to study Chinese calligraphy from an excellent teacher for many years. This has given me tremendous help in techniques to control the brush during painting, as well as gaining proficiency in Chinese calligraphy, of course.”
